One Full Day Itinerary in Pai, Thailand
Nestled in northern Thailand, Pai is a delightful town renowned for its breathtaking natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and lively night market.
For those staying in Chiang Mai and seeking a short escape, Pai is an excellent choice, about a three-hour drive away. Be aware that the journey involves winding mountain roads, so if you’re prone to car sickness, it’s best to come prepared.
Pai is perfect for a two-day or weekend getaway. It’s a compact town that you can easily explore in an afternoon or evening, with plenty of opportunities to venture beyond the town to discover the surrounding natural wonders.
I did find that the town attracts mostly two types of tourism. A group that has journeyed to get away from the hustle of the cities and wants to spend time in nature, or a unique crowd of tourists who enjoy going barefoot, indulging in psychedelics, and embracing a carefree lifestyle. If either is your vibe, you’ll feel right at home in Pai.
Here's a One-Day Itinerary to make the most of your visit:
Breakfast at a Local Cafe
Start your day with a hearty breakfast at one of Pai's cozy cafés. Enjoy local Thai dishes or Western options with a cup of freshly brewed coffee.
Try Lemon Thyme Backyard for breakfast.
Climb the stairs at Wat Phra That Mae Yen -- White Buddha
Visit Wat Phra That Mae Yen, known for its impressively sized white Buddha statue, which you can catch sight of from the town. The temple is located on a hill, offering panoramic views of Pai and the surrounding mountains. It is located very close to Pai Walking Street about a mile and a half.
For the best view check the weather and the air quality for a clear day. Also, a great place for sunrise or sunset.
Travel Tip: Be prepared for stairs it is a couple of flights to the top, roughly 360 steps from the parking lot but the view is worth it.
***Don't forget to dress respectfully, covering shoulders and knees. This goes for any temple in Thailand, Thailand is a modest culture and expects tourist to respect their holy sites. Cover-ups are available for purchase at the base of the stairs***
Take a Swim at Mo Paeng Waterfall
Then head outside of town to Mo Paeng Waterfall, a serene spot perfect for a morning swim or a refreshing dip. The waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery, offering a tranquil start to your day. If it is a hot day this is a great place to cool off and spend a few hours.
It is about a 20 minute drive to Mo Paeng Waterfall from the town of Pai. There is a charge of 100 baht for entry but it was worth it. Easily accessible with a few minute walk from the parking area. Take a dip and explore the area.
Travel Tip: Bring a towel and wear water-friendly shoes, as the rocks can be slippery.
Lunch at a Local Restaurant
Enjoy a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant. Try traditional Thai dishes like Pad Thai, Khao Soi, or Som Tum.
Chinese Village and Overlook
After lunch, visit the Chinese Village (Santichon Village), a small Yunnanese Chinese community. Explore the village, sample traditional Chinese tea, and take in the stunning views from the overlook. It is 20 baht per person but a nice view of the surrounding area.
This village offers unique cultural insights into the Chinese influence in Northern Thailand.
Pai Canyon
Head to Pai Canyon for a bit of hiking and unique views. The canyon's red sandstone formations and narrow trails offer a unique landscape to explore. The trails seem to go on forever and it is easy to spend an hour exploring the area.
